Elizabeth McNutt and Shannon Wettstein are Calliope, a self-declared commuter duo which performs the most virtuosic and innovative works of the last century. Calliope formed almost two decades ago; over the years the duo has survived multiple cross-country moves. Currently Elizabeth lives in Denton, TX and Shannon resides in Minneapolis, MN. The interstate highway I-35 connects their two homes, albeit nearly 1000 miles apart. Calliope’s collaborations have always involved cross-country or international travel. Thus, the idea of a road trip was born. The duo is planning a concert tour along the I-35 corridor with concerts from San Antonio, TX to Duluth, MN, with multiple stops along the way.
In their collaborations as the Calliope Duo and in their highly acclaimed solo performances, Dr. McNutt and Dr. Wettstein present the most original, innovative, and excellent newly composed music. For our I-35 tour we will have a call for scores from January, 2018- June, 2018 from composers who live within 100 miles of I-35 to identify outstanding new works for the tour. We are also commissioning new works for the tour, and will be actively developing these works with our collaborators from January, 2018 through June, 2019. The tour has two loops: a northern loop of venues in Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota during September 2019 and a southern loop of venues in Texas and Oklahoma in October. At each performance on our I-35 tour Calliope will perform premieres of newly commissioned works for flute and piano written by our project collaborators, Dr. Ethan Wickman (San Antonio, TX), Dr. Kostas Karathanasis (Norman, OK), Dr. Seth Shafer (Omaha, NE) Dr. Scott Miller (Minneapolis, MN), and Dr. Justin Rubin (Duluth, MN), as well as recently completed works by Dr. Kirsten Broberg and Dr. Jon Christopher Nelson (Denton, TX).
It is important to Calliope and our collaborators to spotlight compositional creativity as well as excellence and engagement in performance throughout all parts of the United States, not only the metropolitan centers of the East and West Coasts. Through the call for scores, Calliope will discover new creative partners and sbuild new musical relationships. Through the commissioning process and multiple performances, we will strengthen existing relationships with our collaborating composers, and add important new works to the canon. Calliope's I-35 concert tour will foster community, develop new talent, and promote the relevance and excellence of new music in the American heartland.
See also Call for ScoresSounds Modern Series, "Brazenly Self-Effacing" at Ft. Worth Modern Art Museum.
Some of the greatest new ideas of modern music - minimalism, ambient music, chance music - are brazenly self-effacing. Much like the artists featured in Disappearing - California, c. 1970, modern composers sometimes go to heroic lengths to negate their own identity and agency, often asking that the performers of their music do the same. The works on this concert will reveal the beauty that can emerge when ego and identity are stripped away from the process of making music.
The most up-to-the-minute and least predictable concert music series in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Sounds Modern explores links between contemporary music and visual arts, connecting thematically to exhibits at the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum. Directed by flutist and modern music guru Elizabeth McNutt, Sounds Modern brings a sonic dimension to the groundbreaking artwork presented at the Modern.
Admission is free and open to the public.
